2017 Facility Manager’s Networking Breakfast Wrap-Up

Proudly co-hosted by the Aquatic & Recreation Institute (ARI), and now in it’s sixth successive year, the ALFA Facility Manager’s Networking Breakfast #ALFANB17 was held on Friday 28 April 2017 in conjunction with the Fitness Show at the new, state of the art, International Convention Centre, Sydney.

Sponsored by ALFA National Sponsor, MYZONE, those in attendance were educated, inspired and entertained by the presentations each based around the topic of ‘Managing Change in the Aquatic & Recreation Industry’.

The event was well attended by professionals from all sectors of the industry, including facility manager’s, council and association representatives and suppliers to the industry.

The speakers included:

Mike Beeney – Director, Asia Pacific, MYZONE
Mike provided insights into the future of wearable technology and how facilities can be using the data collected to better understand their members activities and help them achieve results.

Jennifer Schembri-Portelli – CEO, AUSTSWIM
Jenni gave a very engaging presentation, asking the question ‘How to you use your pool?’. We all know about making the most of the ‘dry’ space at your facility, but what about your swimming pool? She spoke how in order to provide the best possible experience to your community, you need to better understand the community in which you operate.

Jenni also gave examples of how other facilities are utilising their ‘wet’ space (which does not involve swimming), including aquatic spin, aerobics, yoga and many other new products on the market, which take up relatively little space in your pool, but could bring in a whole new type of member which had not previously used the pool.

Stacey Aldous – Owner, Personal Trainer & Group Fitness Instructor
Stacey is very passionate about the industry, which was evident in her presentation on how she was able to overcome obstacles when establishing her new business (such as small population/high unemployment) by getting to know her community, their needs and in turn, build a very successful business.

Dr Jeff Walkley – National Disability & Diversity Manager , Belgravia Leisure
Dr Jeff Walkley spoke about the results of an Access & Inclusion survey that he had conducted through Belgravia Leisure. He also provided an overview of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and what your facility needs to be doing to prepare for this growing community.

Overall, attendees were provided with ideas and examples on how to better engage their community, improve the range of services, prepare for the future to ensure community leisure facilities continue to provide outstanding aquatic and recreation experiences into the future within this highly competitive industry.

Copies of the presentations will be available soon through the ARI website.
